Rwanda, Home to a thousand Hills
Transitioning from a French to English speaking country, Rwanda is some sort of bucket list item that people of different interest should have on theirs because it includes wildlife lovers, humanitarians and simply curious minds.
About Rwanda
Mainly noted in history because of the grizzly 100 days of massacre between the Hutu and Tutsi tribes in 1994 where an estimate of 800,000 people lost their lives according to what the BBC termed ‘The 100 days of slaughter’. The beauty of patriotism and togetherness arising from those 1994 ashes however is amazing. At 26,338 square kilometres Rwanda is among the smallest countries in Africa with 12 million people, having Kigali as its capital and bordered by Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Rwanda’s Sites and Wildlife
Kigali Genocide Memorial. As earlier mentioned, the 1994 genocide is being used as a tool for peace and an example by the rest of the world at “how far hatred can go…”, as explained by a visitor of the Kigali Genocide Memorial with bodies of 250,000 victims kept there. This is open to students and visitors alike wanting to know the history and events that took place in the 100 days
Gorilla trekking. It is estimated that over 29,000 permits are issued each year in Rwanda for locals and visitors wanting to see the Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitats.
Virunga Mountains. Derived from Ibirunga in Kinyarwanda to mean mountains when loosely translated, the Virunga is a collection of 8 mountains with Lake Kivu and Edward in the vicinity and activities to do here include;
• Mountain hiking
• Gorilla trekking
• Visiting the way of life of the local communities
Kivu. This is a freshwater lake along the Africa’s Great Rift Valley with beautiful hilly and mountainous landscape filled with banana plantations.
